Farringtons School

8 Garage Door Mural

Thank you to Farringtons School for bringing me back after so many years for a wonderful opportunity to bring some colour into the school, Catching up with old teachers was a wonderful full-circle moment! I couldn't have done it without bringing on Mia Wignall seeing our designs come to life from sketches was an amazing experience just after graduating. Our first freelance experience is one that we will remember and we are so pleased with the outcome of the mural! More about our process is below.

Process

from sketches to outcome

The first step was getting in touch to learn more about the space/ vision of what the school wanted. Gathering details such as size, material of doors and time frame with a site visit talking to teachers and groundsmen in the first meeting. After gaining some knowledge of what they were looking for/ my previous student knowledge we were able to begin thumbnailing 3 sets of designs. Another meeting was set up to discuss three different ideas presented to the headmaster for the doors, which was more narrative-based, blowing up the kid's drawings to see how they would fit in with the doors on a larger scale and a more block design. This gave us an idea of what they liked about the styles and visuals they were after across all eight doors. This meeting allowed any changes to come after. This allowed us to draw up a quote & deposit to then get approved. Then the fun bit is finalising the designs with feedback from the last meeting to create the sketches below which had another meeting for final tweaks. After the design was approved, we began to install the mural on a door-by-door basis sending invoices after each door.

The designs are a complete merge of drawings/ ideas that I led with Mia Wignall concentrating on text and small details. I concentrated on lots of elements of each door such as characters, bug designs, signposts and combined the feedback.
